H ydrochloric acid (HCl) is needed in the stomach to break down our food and help absorb its nutrients. Symptoms of low HCl, or an underactive stomach, are excessive gas, belching or feeling very full after meals, halitosis, acne, and nausea after taking supplements. Low HCl will reduce absorption of nutrients from the foods we eat as well; specifically calcium, iron and zinc – the very minerals athletes and bodybuilders need for ATP energy production and for muscle cell growth and repair. Stress, aging, inadequate chewing, and excessive consumption of protein or dairy are just some of the causes of reduced HCl.

There are natural foods that we can add to our diets to help stimulate our production of HCl; they include apple cider vinegar, black olives, celery, beets, and lemon juice.
